Claire and Chane don't appear often in Baccano! series as a whole, but when they do take some decent screentime: be ready to drool and rejoice.
After clearing his contract with the Gandor brothers, Claire made his first move to find Chane through Daily Days, which he helped out a great deal near the start of 1932 (though unintentionally). But he was soon facing a dilemma: how would he approach Chane without being attacked? Doesn't sound like a common romantic worry, I would say.
Laces and Reunion
After arriving at New York City, Chane ended up staying with a group of Chicago born street gangs who were also on board Flying Pussyfoot in December 1931. Having failed to rescue her father, Chane was experiencing a loss of purpose in life when a package signed by Rail Tracer was sent to her - with a beautifully frilled white dress inside.
This is when we observe the biggest shift of emotions in Chane. Before meeting up with Claire and her current allies, Chane's world was composed of only herself and her father Huey. She didn't need anyone else to notice her as long as Huey was by her side and wanted her help. However, the incident at and after Flying Pussyfoot gave Chane a better perspective of the real world, which made her aware of her fear to let other people into her comfort zone: the Chicago gangs were friendly without any hidden motive, and while Chane appreciated their kindness, she was still afraid of stepping out of her shell and make more important people in her life after being alone for so many years. Now Claire's sudden gift made her even more confused: just what did he see in her that was so special?
Claire, however, was hardly thinking about anything as complicated. He might be a top-class killer, but he's ridiculously simple when it comes to love: Chane occupied his mind like no other woman ever did and that was all the reason he needed to make a life-long commitment. As it turns out, Claire's strange philosophy of life eventually became the winning point in his relationship with Chane: he had no intention to destroy her world - he was only there to expand and accept it into his own.
