Claire and Chane don't appear often in Baccano! series as a whole, but when they do take some decent screentime: be ready to drool and rejoice.
Many interesting facts about Claire and Chane's fluffy relationship were brought up during 1933's Mist Wall incident. The level of trust between them increased a great deal in the one year we've missed, though not without new dilemmas built on the way.
Rain of Blood
A year had past since Claire and Chane's semi-formal engagement. Claire remained his goofy and sometimes childish self that we know so well, but the changes in Chane were nothing short of a shock. The black porcelain doll of Flying Pussyfoot days was suddenly a woman with sweet loving air, even if her eyes were as golden as ever and her senses as sharp. She also became more comfortable with expressing her love and concern in front of others, partially thanks to Claire for being so straight-forward with his.
The battle at Mist Wall, however, revealed the biggest fear behind Chane's renewed faith in life. What if she was asked to choose between her loyalty to Huey and her love for her new family? To Chane's relief, Claire - aka. the King of confidence - was not in the least troubled.
- Claire: If you were ordered (by your father) to finish me off, feel free to keep trying. I'll just avoid your attacks while stay in love. Wait, actually that feels more like true love!
- Chane: ... (smile)
What a perfect narcissist! Yet at the same time, we cannot ignore the reality that Claire is serious about everything he says and has the power to make them come true. It's obvious that Firo called him the "strongest human" for a good reason, and Chane remains the only person who can handle him without hesitation because she listens to him by heart, not by ears.
Last but not the least, Claire made a meaningful statement near the end of 1933 saga, which might serve as a hint for future plots in his story with Chane:
- Claire: Huey Laforet and Nebula, huh.
- Chane: ?
- Claire: (excerpt omitted) It's about time I get inside of (your) world, too.
- Chane: ...
- Claire: When something like this happens again - Chane, I'll be on my way to see your dad.
- Chane: (nods with confidence)
May eternal happiness befall this love game of life or death.
